I'm the type that has to have ideas down on paper to wrap my brain around them so I'm going to write some things out that we discussed at the last meeting and open it up so that everyone can add in their thoughts for the teaching time with the girls and items to take. We are still not sure if we're only teaching the Wellington girls or the whole school. Chris any news on that?
Teaching Ideas:
1.What God thinks of woman from a biblical perspective using scripture and female biblical examples bringing in the theme of value.
2.Teaching them Bible Study methods.
3.Have the girls draw one of the fruits of the spirit But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness or a virtue from the verse Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience and then they have to focus on that fruit or virtue that day and share in the next group time what the Lord taught them through that focus.
Things people said they are taking or want to take:
Shanna mentioned journals
Lora and Presli Sports Bras
Many or all of us feminine protection
Nail polish?
The flat iron was a hit with the girls when Wendy went last month so I am for sure bringing mine
Ok, let's see those ideas roll out on your blog. I know we have amazing ideas that will love the girls well and glorify the God of the Universe who has gone before us and prepared the way.
Love,
Karla

Ideas:
ReplyDeleteI loved all the ideas shared at our last meeting. I also wondered if we could not only do corporate Bible study/teaching but also break it down into smaller groups once or twice over the week to pray with the kids and share how we spend our quiet times with the Lord and give the girls opportunity to ask questions in a smaller group.
I also loved the idea about feet washing along with the pedicures that was shared that night!
Jennifer H.
Jennifer H. Thanks for putting H behind your 1st name as we have a few Jennifers.
ReplyDeleteI would love to do a ceremonial type thing of washing their feet and painting their toes. Jesus showed so much humility and love when He, the Savior of the world, washed his disciples' feet.
I think the idea is to do a big group teaching then break into smaller groups for more intimate discussion. That would be a great place for us to share our testimonies, what it looks like for us to spend time with the Lord and how we do this daily walking with Him thing or wherever the girls lead...
Seeing as how I need to learn bible study methods myself, I won't be contributing there ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of showing them what God thinks about them through his word. While African culture may devalue women, I think we often miss the mark as far as what God expects and desires for his girls as well. Rachel mentioned 12 extraordinary women which is an excellent book and one of the women in my bible study included that same book to give to the girls along with other things which I thought was pretty cool.
I have a whole office filled with feminine hygiene products, hair stuff, soap, undies, etc. Women in my bible study are using this as our service project and they are collecting and bringing me all sorts of items. I can't imagine life without tampons so I'm loading up on those :)
Oh, I forgot to add. I thought about a mini library. I'm not sure what books they have but we could all bring some books that have influenced our view and drawn us closer to God. They dont have to be new and they only need one copy to share ... just a thought.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the library.
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
ReplyDelete1. Have all the kids accepted Christ?
2. Are all the kids able to read? If so are they on grade level?
Since I live in Oklahoma I haven't been able to make it to the meetings, so this may already have been discussed but I'm just throwing it out there.
ReplyDeleteI'm apart of student leadership ministry and when we have our camps at the end of everyday we lead the girls in what we call 'rondevoux' AKA girl time. During this time each one of the girls gets a chance to share about their day and tell about something God taught them an area they struggled with, we would then read scripture, maybe sing a worship song and end in prayer. They are really simple, casual and spirit led times together, but everytime I've been in a 'roundevoux' night they have always been amazing times of sharing, close bonding, honesty, and encouragement and even the quietest and most withdrawn girls open up in this kind of setting.
I know during the days its easy to get busy and distracted so I just was thinking that these 'rondevoux' type times would be great to re-connect and re-focus every night and it would go perfectly with doing a salon type night like mentioned above. Just another idea.
Woohoo! I'm all over the roundevoux...love that! Do you think we'd need to break into smaller groups by age or whatever. Can we all gather together and then break up...or just all hang together and see what happens? Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI think at the next meeting...we need to come into agreement about an overall theme, and then break it down day by day with who's doing what. As time grows closer, everyone really needs to know what they're signing up for so they know how to prepare.
I think the women of the Bible idea can tie in well with the fruit of the Spirit idea--like matching one of those women to a specific characteristic that really stands out in her life as she trusted in God...and then taking it into life application about how that trait can be manifested in our own lives daily, as we walk by faith in Christ. I believe the concept of worth and value will be and should be reiterated throughout our time together....that just tends to be a pressing issue with women, in general--in Africa or the U.S.
I did a similar talk one time where a special quality was matched with a few of the women who walked with Jesus...Mary--Jesus' mama--(faith), Mary--sister of Martha and Lazarus and sitter at Jesus' feet--(intimacy), Martha (service), Mary Magdalene (passion/devotion), etc. We could highlight however many women from OT/NT passages, if we want to explore more of the Bible. I think the key is to keep it real and simple, not dry or too lengthy, while intentionally and authentically crossing the bridge into life application lessons from the biblical world into theirs, sharing our own relative experiences along the way. Thoughts?
So, too, maybe we should be thinking and praying through who wants to do what. Who wants to teach in a larger setting, who will lead a small group setting, who wants to gear up for social/fun stuff, who wants to plan games,(Lora sp? and Preslie mentioned this at the last meeting), who wants to pray, who wants to just hang, who wants to fill in and help as needed. For some, there is a natual gravitation to a certain area/task--that's your gifting; or there may be a new calling God has laid upon you for a time such as this...be brave, step forward; or, it could be that you need to sit a while and wait and see. I know, though, that some busy beavers are ready to have a plan in place and get to moving.
Thoughts?? (That's my word for the day. :)
Btw, my heart is pounding, and my hands are sweating. I'm excited...but that usually means God is going to ask me to do something different. Hmmm?
Love you!
Jen Maddox
Thanks Jen for organizing so many of our thoughts. I too think we will gravitate towards our giftedness and areas of interest. I love to teach, hence my profession and absolutely feel alive leading small groups.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to making some decisions and getting a clearer vision for our time with the girls. God is GOOD!
Jen - I loved the idea of tying together the women of the Bible and the Fruit of the Spirit. I love the example that you gave!

WOW! You all have such wonderful ideas. I am not really a task-person. I am EXTREMELY relational. I love leading small groups and prayer! I like all of the ideas. I just know the Lord will bring it all together into something beautiful and perfect for the girls. EEEEEE I can't wait!
